Waite Hoyt decided to retire as Cincinnati Reds' radio announcer during the 1965 season after his longtime sponsor, Burger Beer, decided it would not return to the air the following year. Waite decided, after 24-seasons of extolling the virtues of Burger, he'd be seen as a hypocrate if he suddenly spoke of the virtues of competing Wiedemann Beer, so he decided to retire. The Reds' threw him a "day" at Crosley Field on September 5, 1965 and Waite gave an inspired ten minute speech. Here's a 5-minute excerpt:
